Jake Cooper, The Captain Who Never Left

Millwall's long-serving captain marshals a back line built as much on his organisation and his voice as on his defending.

Cooper reads the game from the centre of defence and spends as much energy directing those around him as he does defending himself. He steps across strikers early and points team-mates into position before a cross even goes in. His organisation of the back line has become the foundation everything else at the club is built on, the sort of presence a squad only develops after years of the same voice giving the same instructions.

Injuries and squad turnover around him rarely seem to affect how calmly he sets the defensive line. The question fans keep returning to is what the defence looks like once he eventually steps back.
