Taïryk Arconte, The Finisher Millwall Fought For

A French striker whose predatory instincts in the box persuaded Millwall to compete with far bigger clubs to sign him.

Arconte scores the sort of goals that look instinctive rather than manufactured, arriving in the right space a split second before the ball does and finishing with minimal backlift. He does not need a string of chances to find the net, converting half opportunities that a more mechanical forward would waste. He times his runs to stay onside without needing to check his stride.

Defenders find him difficult to track precisely because he rarely announces his movement before he makes it. The question is how quickly he adapts his instincts to a league that gives forwards far less time and space than French second tier defences typically allow. Bigger clubs circled before Millwall won the race to sign him, which raises its own expectation that he repays that faith quickly rather than needing a long adjustment period.
