George Evans, The Goalkeeper Thrown Into The Fire

A young academy goalkeeper whose composed emergency debut suggested he was far more ready than the circumstances implied.

Evans stayed calm in a first team debut that came about only because Millwall suddenly had no other senior goalkeeper fit to play. He handled the pressure far better than anyone had a right to expect. He stops shots with good technique rather than just relying on instinct, and he talks to his defenders despite having little senior experience behind him.

A loan spell away from Millwall has given him regular first team football, the kind of steady match time academy football alone cannot replicate. The question is whether that good emergency start leads to a real path into the senior goalkeeping picture rather than staying a one off moment fans fondly remember. Fans will want to see him build on that loan spell, because staying calm under real pressure is hard to coach and he has already shown he has some of it.
