Paul Smyth, The Forward Who Scores On Debuts

A winger who scored the winning goal on both his club debut and his international debut plays with pure nerve.

Smyth plays with real directness, happier running at a full back and forcing a decision than waiting for an opening to appear. He announced himself with a winning goal on his senior club debut, then repeated the trick soon after on his international debut, scoring the winner for Northern Ireland minutes after coming on. That knack for the right moment has followed him through a career that has taken in a release, a loan away, and a return to the club that first believed in him.

The obvious question is whether a player defined by explosive moments can also provide sustained, week to week end product. He has already proven the nerve is there. Consistency rather than instinct is what now separates him from a bigger role in the side.
