Iliman Ndiaye, Escaping Where Others Get Caught

A forward whose first instinct in a crowded area is to keep the ball rather than release it.

Ndiaye plays with the ball closer to his feet than almost anybody else in the squad, which is why he can accept a pass with his back to goal and a defender leaning on his shoulder. The turn comes first, the acceleration second, and by then the challenge that was arriving has been left behind him. He learned the game in the lower reaches of English football before the Championship and France, and that grounding shows in how rarely he panics.

Output is the debate, because a player this good at keeping possession in tight areas gets judged eventually on goals and the final pass. He drifts through matches where the ball rarely reaches him anywhere worth having. Everton need him receiving between the lines rather than hugging the touchline, which asks the midfield for a pass that is not always available.
