Jake O'Brien, The Centre Half Playing Elsewhere

A defender whose best position is the subject of a longer argument than his ability ever was.

O'Brien attacks a cross like somebody who has never once been outjumped, which is the obvious benefit of standing taller than almost every forward he faces. He is also unusually willing to step out of the back line with the ball at his feet, carrying it into midfield until an opponent commits and a passing angle opens up. Everton signed him as a centre half and the evidence keeps suggesting that is where he does his best work.

Being asked to play right back complicates all of that, because defending the touchline demands turning, recovery and crossing rather than heading and blocking. He copes without ever looking like a natural, and the attacking side of the role rarely comes off. The awkward truth is that the established pair in the middle have been at the club considerably longer than he has.
