Jordan Pickford, The Goalkeeper Who Starts Attacks

A goalkeeper judged mostly on his saves who does far more damage to opponents with his distribution.

Pickford gets talked about mostly for his shot stopping, which hides the part of his game that actually earns Everton points across a season. The first thing he looks for once the ball is in his hands is the pass, usually long, usually towards a runner that nobody else in the stadium has spotted yet. Everton have built entire counter attacks from a single throw out of their own penalty area, which is something very few goalkeepers in this division would even try.

His temper divides opinion and always has, because he shouts, he waves his arms, he argues with defenders whose minds have already wandered somewhere else. From the stands it can look like chaos. Watched properly, it is a goalkeeper who refuses to let a back four drift out of shape, which is exactly why Everton concede fewer soft goals than their raw defensive numbers suggest.
