James Garner

Garner finds the pass that everybody in the stadium can see is available and almost nobody else attempts, threading it through a gap between opponents rather than safely around them. He leads Everton for passes that remove defenders from the move, and a good number of those arrive in the final third where they hurt most. The work without the ball is just as relentless, chasing and pressing in his own half like a far less refined player.

He has also been used at right back and at left back when Everton needed it, and did the job well enough that the experiment kept being repeated. That sort of usefulness can flatten a career, because the versatile player often ends up covering positions rather than owning one. His best football has come centrally with a ball winner alongside him.
