Aston Villa

Ian Maatsen

An attacking left back who was a winger himself, still happiest bursting forward down the flank and getting into the box rather than staying tucked in beside the centre backs. His end product from that position is genuinely rare for a defender.

Ian Maatsen, The Left Back Who Attacks First

Villa's left back gets forward with a winger's instincts and end product that most defenders simply do not have.

Maatsen plays left back with the mentality of a winger, pushing forward at every opportunity rather than treating attack as a bonus. His pace and close control let him beat a man in one on one situations out wide. Once he reaches the final third, his end product is genuinely dangerous, whether that means a cross, a cutback, or a shot of his own.

The trade off with a full back this committed to attacking is what happens behind him when possession is lost. A defender who spends so much time high up the pitch has further to recover than most. Villa manage that with a midfield that shifts across to cover the space he leaves, and he sprints back into position quickly once an attack breaks down, treating that recovery run as seriously as the overlap itself.

Clean sheets in the Premier League and Championship

Five Premier League keepers have three clean sheets from five games, but Konstantinos Tzolakis has made the most saves of the group. In the Championship, George Wickens has matched Lawrence Vigouroux's four clean sheets while facing far more shots.

Match Bingo Game Modes Explained

There are three game types on Match Bingo and they behave less alike than they sound. Live Games follow a real fixture as it's played. Bingoals swaps the fifteen events for fifteen teams and needs every one of them to score. Quick Games run every few minutes on football from last season, so there's nothing to wait for.

Does a New Signing Change Anything on Your Match Bingo Card?

Deadline day comes and goes and your card stays exactly as it was. Match Bingo cards are built from things that happen in a match, goals and corners and fouls, rather than from the players who make them happen. No name on a teamsheet reaches a single square. Here's what a signing does change, and what it doesn't.

Is Match Bingo Safe? Licensing, Fair Play and Player Protection

Two things usually sit behind that question: whether the company is real and regulated, and whether the game itself can be got at by somebody sharper than you. Match Bingo is operated by RTSB Limited under Gambling Commission account 51467, which takes about a minute to check. The second answer is duller: there's nothing to press.

What Is Football Bingo?

A card holds fifteen things that can happen in a football match, and each square marks itself the moment its event happens in the fixture you've chosen. You buy before kick-off, then you go and watch the game. Complete a horizontal row of five before anybody else and you take the fixed prize for that tier.

This Week on Match Bingo: Premier League and Championship, 28 to 31 August

A Friday night opener, a full Saturday, and Villa against Arsenal alone on the Monday.

Ian Maatsen: The Left-Side Accelerator

Villa’s modern full-back, built to drive into space and link play like an extra midfielder

Maatsen plays like he’s trying to tilt the pitch. He takes the ball on the move, drives into space, and forces defenders into retreat because he closes distance so quickly. He gives Villa more than width, he gives them momentum, the run that turns a quiet phase into a sudden attack and makes opponents shuffle into emergency defending.

What makes him stand out is that he doesn’t sprint without purpose. He chooses his moments, sometimes overlapping, sometimes stepping inside to support possession, sometimes holding position to protect the transition. That decision-making makes him a natural fit for Emery’s structured football, where full-backs are pieces of shape, not just runners.
