Matty Cash, The Converted Winger At Right Back

Villa's right back still plays like an old winger, which explains the overlapping runs down the flank.

Cash never really stopped being a winger once Villa moved him into the back line. It shows every time he sprints beyond the last defender, timing his run to arrive exactly as the ball is played. That drags the opposition wide man out of position and opens a lane nobody else can see.

When the cross does not come off, he is comfortable enough to cut inside and shoot himself. The trade off is what happens behind him when possession is lost, because a right back who thinks like a winger is not always home in time. Emery compensates by sliding a midfielder across to cover the space Cash leaves whenever he joins the attack.
