Taylor Harwood-Bellis, The Centre Back Who Builds

A defender raised inside a possession heavy academy who still looks to play out rather than simply clear his lines.

Harwood-Bellis grew up inside a youth system that trained centre backs to treat the ball as something to be used rather than discarded, and that habit has stuck through a run of loan spells at very different clubs. He is comfortable enough in possession to step into midfield briefly and start attacks himself. That confidence on the ball, more than raw pace or aerial power, is what separates him from a purely defensive stopper.

The loan spells that shaped him were also a sign that his own club never quite trusted him with a settled run at the top level, sending him instead to find regular football elsewhere. He arrives at Southampton with an England call up already on his record, which raises an obvious question. Whether this move finally becomes the platform that lets him hold down a first choice spot for good remains to be seen.
