Southampton are back in familiar territory, but another Championship campaign comes with much heavier expectations. The squad contains enough quality for promotion to be the obvious target, and there is little room for a season that drifts into the middle of the table. At this level, Southampton should expect to have more of the ball and spend long periods forcing opponents backwards.
The challenge is making that superiority count. They have sometimes looked like a side capable of controlling matches without doing enough damage, and the Championship is full of teams comfortable defending deep and waiting for mistakes. Southampton's technical level should separate them from much of the division, but only if they rediscover the decisiveness that has occasionally been missing.
This is a season in which performances matter, but the final league position will ultimately define whether the campaign has worked.
