A steep hill to climb

Starting on minus four is about as annoying as it gets. Southampton are playing catch-up before they’ve even had a chance to get going, and you just know that little minus sign is going to get mentioned every single time the table pops up.

Still, four points isn’t the end of the world. Win a couple on the bounce and suddenly it looks a lot less depressing The bigger thing is not letting it become the defining story of their season if they have a crap week or two.

There should be loads going on around Saints this year anyway. A potential promotion push to chase, ground to make up and a big south coast derby match with Portsmouth waiting further down the season.
