Fellows can play through the middle, drop into an attacking midfield role, or work from a wide position, and he did all three well enough at his previous club to be voted its best young player in consecutive seasons. That recognition rarely goes to a player who only offers one trick. It suggests a forward whose football intelligence lets him adapt to whatever a manager asks of him on a given weekend, and Southampton bought that flexibility along with the goal threat.
The risk with a player this adaptable is that he never quite settles into the single position where he might become outstanding rather than simply useful everywhere. He has already shown at Southampton that he can unsettle opponents who accuse him of overstepping the line physically. Where he starts most often this season will say a lot about how the club sees his long term role.
