Jack Stephens, The Captain Who Steps Forward

A converted right back whose habit of carrying the ball forward makes him unusual among Southampton's centre backs.

Stephens plays centre back with the instincts of a defender who once lined up further forward, happy to step out with the ball rather than clear it under the first sign of pressure. He is a genuinely good header of the ball at his own end and in the opposition box, and his willingness to take an opponent on rather than pass sideways separates him from more conservative partners. Southampton made him captain for exactly this kind of assurance.

That same combativeness has cost him repeatedly, with red cards for the kind of reckless challenge or confrontation with an official that a calmer defender would simply avoid. It leaves Southampton relying on a captain who is as likely to be the reason they concede a man advantage as he is to prevent a goal. Managing that temper without dulling the aggression that makes him useful remains the ongoing challenge.
