Pau Torres, The Defender Who Steps Into Midfield

Villa's left footed centre back adds an extra body to midfield by simply carrying the ball forward himself.

Torres reads the passing lanes in front of him rather than waiting for the ball to arrive before reacting. That lets him intercept danger before it properly develops. In possession he is comfortable stepping past the first line of pressure, effectively turning himself into an extra midfielder for a few seconds at a time.

That left foot gives Villa a different angle to build from compared to a defence full of right footers. Injuries have interrupted his time at Villa more than supporters would like, which makes a fully fit version of him feel like a different player entirely. Watch how often he steps out first when Villa build from the back, because that is usually where the move actually begins. When everything clicks, his calm under pressure tends to set the tone for the defenders playing around him.
