Vipotnik does his best work in the small pockets of space that open up for a second or two around the six yard box, rather than dropping deep to link the play like a more mobile modern forward. Being comfortable finishing with either foot means defenders cannot simply show him onto his weaker side and expect it to work, which forces centre backs to track him properly rather than backing off. He arrived from French football with a reputation as a pure finisher, and little about his game at Swansea has argued otherwise.

The trade off is obvious enough. A striker built almost entirely around finishing chances in the box can go quiet for long spells when service from midfield dries up, because he offers so little outside the penalty area to compensate.
