Woodward has scored goals from midfield throughout his time in Swansea's academy, at a rate that regularly put him among the club's top scorers regardless of age group. That is an unusual trait for a player operating from deep rather than as an outright forward. He made his mark for Wales at youth level too, scoring on his first appearance for the under nineteens against senior opposition from another country. His promotion to first team training suggests the club sees him as more than just a prolific youth number.

The step up from scoring against academy defences to doing it against senior professionals is significant. Plenty of youth goalscorers have found their end product disappear once opponents are older, faster and less forgiving of a lack of physical strength. Watch whether that scoring instinct survives first contact with senior Championship football, because youth football rarely offers the same test.
