Richard O'Donnell, The Keeper Ready On No Notice

Given less than half an hour to prepare, he made his Derby debut anyway and looked entirely unbothered by it.

O'Donnell has played for more clubs across more divisions than almost anyone else in the Derby squad. That sounds like a mark against a goalkeeper, until it becomes obvious how useful that experience is in an emergency. He was previously trusted to captain a club from inside his own penalty area, a role usually reserved for outfield players. That says plenty about how his teammates and coaches have rated his authority and communication over the years.

The value he offers Derby is less about being first choice and more about removing any panic when the first choice goalkeeper cannot play. Being handed a debut with almost no warning and still performing calmly is not an accident. It is the direct result of two decades spent staying ready for exactly that phone call, whenever it eventually comes.
