Derry John Murkin

Murkin left England as a boy, and grew up inside a footballing culture that asks defenders to build attacks rather than simply end them. That upbringing shows in how comfortably he receives the ball under pressure, turning inside when the winger ahead of him is marked instead of forcing a cross that was never on. He returned to England as a fully formed passer, which is not always true of full backs raised purely in the English game.

Whether that education survives a division built on physicality and second balls is the real question. Championship full backs get outmuscled before they get outpassed, and the physical side of the job asks something different of him than the continent ever did. Watch whether his positioning holds once a winger stops respecting his passing range and simply runs at him instead.
