Rhian Brewster, The Finisher Trying To Reclaim His Gift

A teenage World Cup winner with England, he now has to rebuild a career that injuries derailed just as it took off.

Brewster's finishing instinct was obvious before he was even a professional. He scored hat tricks against the United States and Brazil on the way to winning a World Cup golden boot for England's youth side. Everything about his movement in the box, the disguised finish, the willingness to shoot early rather than take an extra touch, still points to a player who understands where the goal is better than most forwards his age. That gift has not disappeared. It has simply been interrupted by his body rather than any drop in ability.

The tension around him now is entirely about fitness rather than talent, because hamstring problems have cost him whole stretches of seasons. Every fit run of matches he strings together really tests whether the player everyone saw at seventeen still exists underneath the setbacks, or whether that moment has already passed.
