Lewis Travis, The Defender Who Became A Captain

One manager said keeping him in the side saved a transfer fee outright, a rare compliment for a midfielder built on positioning.

Travis began his career as a defender, before a change of position turned him into one of the more dependable defensive midfielders outside the Premier League. That background explains why his instincts in front of the back four feel more like a centre back's than a typical holding midfielder's. He screens danger early and breaks up attacks before they properly develop. He rarely gets caught upfield chasing a game that has not actually gone away from his team yet.

Derby handed him the captaincy almost as soon as he arrived. That says plenty about the leadership qualities coaches keep identifying in him wherever he goes. The challenge now is whether a midfielder built on positioning and organisation, rather than flair, can be the voice a whole dressing room follows through a genuinely difficult run of results, not just a settled one.
