Max Johnston, The Right Back Who Won Abroad

League titles in Austria before he had even settled into English football say plenty about how far his career has already travelled.

Johnston left Scottish football early for Austria, a bold move for a young full back, and he came back having actually won things, rather than simply gained experience for its own sake. He plays right back with an attacking bias, comfortable overlapping into space and delivering from wide areas. The titles he collected abroad suggest a player who adapted quickly, rather than one merely along for the ride. Football runs in his family, which likely explains how naturally he settled into professional environments so young.

Injuries disrupted his first season back in England before he had properly found his feet in a new league. That makes fitness the real story around him rather than ability. A full back with his pedigree abroad should eventually strengthen a Championship back line, provided his body allows him a consistent run of matches.
