Mirko Topić, The Midfielder Who Shields The Defence

He moved from Serbian football to a long deal in Portugal, then Norwich paid a fee for his protective instinct.

Topić made his name as a defensive midfielder for Vojvodina before Portuguese side Famalicão signed him on a lengthy contract, a move that tested him against a higher standard of technical opposition than Serbian football typically offers. He earned his senior Serbia debut in a friendly against the United States, starting rather than appearing off the bench. Norwich paid a serious fee to bring him to England.

That fee reflects genuine belief in a player whose job is protecting the back four rather than producing headline moments. The tension with a specialist holding midfielder is that his value is easy to overlook when things go well and impossible to ignore when they do not. Whether he brings that discipline to a division built more on physical duels than patient build up is the question that will define his time in England.
