Christoph Klarer, The Captain Who Stays Calm

Klarer captains the side after learning his defending the hard way, through relegation battles in the Bundesliga and Austrian football.

Klarer organises Birmingham's defence with the calm of someone who has already lived through the extremes of German football, promotion one year and relegation the next at different clubs. He rarely panics under pressure, choosing the simple pass or the well timed step across his man over anything flashier. That composure is part of why Birmingham handed him the captaincy so soon after he arrived from Germany.

The tension around Klarer is less about ability and more about whether one calm centre back can organise an entire back line week after week.
