Osayi-Samuel attacks from right back the way a winger would, pushing high and wide to stretch the opposition rather than sitting back and waiting to defend. Several seasons in Turkey with Fenerbahçe sharpened that attacking instinct against continental opposition, and it earned him a regular place in the Nigeria squad. He reached the later stages of an Africa Cup of Nations during that spell, evidence his game holds up under serious pressure too.

The trade off with an attacking full back like this is what happens in behind him whenever he is caught high up the pitch chasing a cross or an overlap. Wingers who run in behind can exploit that space quickly, which puts extra responsibility on the centre backs alongside him to cover ground he has vacated. Birmingham clearly value the attacking upside enough to accept that risk, judging by how often he is used going forward.
