Sunderland weren’t supposed to do that. Seventh in the first season back, and Europe for the first time since 1974. There aren’t many better answers to being written off.

The trick now is doing it twice. Second seasons are where promoted sides usually get found out, and a European run adds games to a squad that spent last year running on adrenaline and a crowd that made every home match feel like a cup tie.
