Omar Alderete, The Defender Who Takes Risks

Sunderland's Paraguayan centre back clears his box relentlessly, then surprises opponents by carrying the ball forward and shooting from distance.

Alderete clears danger from his box at a rate few centre backs in Europe's top leagues can match, throwing himself into aerial duels and getting a boot to crosses before a striker can react. He counter presses the moment possession is lost, closing down the nearest man rather than dropping into a safer position. That aggression defines his defending far more than patient reading of the game does.

What sets him apart is what he does once he actually has the ball, since he is willing to carry it forward into midfield and even shoot from distance when the chance appears. That is unusual territory for a defender built primarily to break up attacks rather than start them. The tension is obvious, because the same aggression that wins him the ball early can just as easily pull him out of position.
