Jean-Philippe Mateta, The Striker Who Shoots First Time

Mateta rarely takes the extra touch that gives a defence time to recover, hitting the ball as it arrives instead.

Mateta plays as the focal point of Palace's attack, holding off a centre back with his back to goal until a midfielder arrives to take the ball off him. His movement is built around becoming a crossing target, drifting into the space a wing back's delivery is heading towards. Once the ball reaches him inside the box he shoots early more often than not, cutting down the goalkeeper's time to set his feet.

The question that follows Mateta is whether that instinctive first time finishing survives a run of matches where the service dries up. He offers less in the way of dropping deep and linking play than some strikers, leaving him reliant on wing backs and midfielders finding him in dangerous areas.
