Gavin Bazunu, The Keeper Fighting Back

A talented young goalkeeper whose progress has been repeatedly interrupted by serious injury rather than by a lack of ability.

Bazunu was considered good enough as a teenager that a major club paid an unusually high fee to sign him purely on potential. He went on to win individual awards during loan spells that confirmed the early judgement was correct, earning recognition among the best young goalkeepers in the country and a first choice international place at a young age. Southampton signed him fully expecting a long term, first choice number one.

That trajectory has been repeatedly derailed by injury rather than by any dip in form, including a ruptured Achilles and a separate knee problem picked up during a loan spell abroad. Each setback has forced him to rebuild fitness and match sharpness from scratch. The goalkeeper Southampton originally signed is still clearly in there, and this season looks like the one where fans find out if his body allows it to show.
