A forward whose biggest moment so far came from the penalty spot in a major shootout for his country.

Downs scored the winning penalty in a shootout for his national team at a major continental tournament, the kind of moment that tells you far more about a striker's temperament than any amount of open play finishing could. That same composure showed up domestically, where a productive season for his previous German club helped it win promotion, with goals arriving from a genuine variety of situations. It is why Southampton moved for him quickly.

What still needs proving is whether that German second tier form travels intact into a more physical, more relentless English Championship schedule, because plenty of strikers who look unplayable at that level have found the step up unforgiving. His late discovery of football, having grown up playing a different sport entirely before switching as a boy, makes his rise all the more notable. Whether the finishing instinct holds up against tougher defending is the real test.
