Richards spent his early years in the game as a forward before a coach at his academy switched him into defence, and the instincts from that period still shape how he plays left back now. He carries the ball forward with the confidence of a player once judged on what he did in the final third. That is different from a defender who learned to defend first and added attacking later.

That background makes him an unusual full back, more comfortable driving past a winger than marking one, and it raises a fair question about where his best position actually sits.
