Gabriel defends by winning the physical argument first, meeting a striker shoulder to shoulder rather than backing off and inviting a comfortable shot. He attacks crosses aggressively in his own box and just as aggressively at the other end, arriving at set pieces with a real sense of danger. His intensity sets a tone for the entire back line, because a defender who competes for every ball raises the standard around him.

The tension is whether that appetite for confrontation occasionally puts him in positions a calmer defender would simply have avoided. He plays right on the edge of what a referee will allow, and that edge has cost him bookings a cautious centre back never picks up at all.
