David Raya, The Goalkeeper Who Starts Attacks

Arsenal's build-up begins with a goalkeeper calm enough to receive the ball under pressure and still pick the right pass.

Raya plays with his feet before his hands, calm enough to take a pass from a defender even with a forward closing him down. He steps off his line to sweep up through balls a more cautious goalkeeper would leave alone, and his distribution turns a routine goal kick into a genuine attack. Arsenal build from the back through him, which changes how every defender ahead of him is allowed to play.

The question is what happens the rare time his distribution goes wrong inside his own box. A misplaced pass there costs more than one further up the pitch, and critics remember that mistake long after the hundred passes that worked. Arsenal have built too much of their identity around his passing to simply pick a more cautious goalkeeper now.
