Gannon-Doak beats a full back with a straight line rather than a stepover, using an explosive first few yards to get to the byline before cover arrives from midfield. That kind of directness became his calling card at Celtic before he had even turned professional properly, and it earned him a reputation on loan in the Championship as a defender's most uncomfortable evening. He is still learning when to use it, because outrunning a full back does not always mean he chooses the right final ball once he gets there.

Knee surgery cost him a chunk of development time at exactly the stage a young winger needs it most, minutes that cannot really be recovered later. He has still forced his way into a senior Scotland squad heading to a World Cup, which tells you plenty about the ceiling. Whether his end product catches up with the pace remains the honest question around him.
