Scott's best quality is timing rather than raw speed, ghosting into the penalty area a fraction after defenders have stopped counting midfielders and started marking forwards. That kind of run is hard to coach and harder still to defend against, because it requires a midfielder both fit enough to make the trip twice a half and composed enough to finish once he arrives. Opposing managers noticed it early, which is largely why a Championship club received a record fee for a teenager still learning the position.

Injuries slowed the beginning of his Bournemouth career in a way his talent never suggested they would, costing him time exactly when supporters expected a breakthrough. He has since forced his way back into an England conversation that looked a long way off during those setbacks. Whether he can now stay fit long enough to become the complete midfielder his early promise pointed towards is the open question.
