Santiago Bueno, The Centre Back Who Steps In

He would rather win the ball early with a committed challenge than retreat and defend the cross that follows a hesitant one.

Bueno engages forwards rather than backing off them, closing the gap before a striker can turn and shoot instead of inviting a shot from distance. He carries the ball out of defence himself when the pass forward is not on, using his body to shield possession from a pressing forward rather than hoofing it clear under panic. That willingness to step out of the back line marks him out from a centre back who simply holds a position.
