Matt Ingram, The Journeyman Who Delayed His Honeymoon

He once delayed his own honeymoon to keep helping a club stay up, which says plenty about his priorities.

Ingram built a career the unglamorous way, working through non league football and League Two before earning recognition as one of the better shot stoppers outside the Championship. That grounding gave him habits that travel well, positioning that rarely leaves him exposed and a calmness between the posts. That calmness comes from having already seen most of what a match can throw at him.

Clubs fighting relegation have repeatedly turned to him on short notice, which is its own kind of endorsement from people who needed a goalkeeper they could trust immediately. What West Brom get is experience rather than upside, a goalkeeper unlikely to produce many surprises in either direction across a long season. The question is simply where he fits into a squad picture built for the years ahead.
