Conor Townsend

Townsend's game is built around getting forward from left back rather than simply defending his flank, timing his overlaps to arrive just as a winger drags a full back out of position. His delivery from wide areas has produced enough genuinely important goals and assists over the years that the nickname stuck. Fans kept using it long after they first made the joke about it.

Defensively he is solid without being spectacular, the kind of full back whose value shows up more in what his side create than in what he personally stops. Having already spent six seasons in a West Brom shirt before leaving, his return brings the kind of experience a young squad can lean on. The question is whether his legs, and specifically his recovery pace, still hold up in Championship football.
