Joe Rodon, The Centre Back Who Steps Forward

Rodon carries the ball into midfield rather than clearing it long, a job normally left to a holding player.

Rodon defends like a player comfortable enough on the ball to ignore the easy option, stepping forward into midfield with it rather than clearing his lines the moment danger appears. That habit turns defence into attack in a single movement, because an opponent set up to press a long ball has nobody to press. He reads passing lanes early too, cutting out balls before they properly develop into a chance.

Playing that way asks a lot of positional trust from the midfielder ahead of him, because stepping out of the back line leaves a gap that has to be covered. Leeds pair him with another calm defender to manage that risk, which works well when both read danger the same way and badly when they do not. How that partnership copes against quicker forward lines is worth watching.
