Gabriel Gudmundsson, The Winger Turned Left Back

Converted from an attacker, he still carries the ball like one, which is why Leeds signed him.

Gudmundsson spent his early career further forward, and the habits from those years never left him once a coach moved him back to left back. He drives with the ball rather than passing sideways, covering ground quickly enough that Leeds can build attacks through him. That carrying ability got him noticed at a bigger club in France, where he became a regular starter.

The tougher part of the job is what happens without the ball, because a full back with an attacker's instincts can drift out of position at the wrong moment. Leeds lean on him heavily going forward, which means the space he leaves behind needs constant covering by whoever plays in front of him. Whether that balance holds against quicker wingers than he faced in France is worth watching.
