Robinson built his career through Preston and West Bromwich Albion before establishing himself as one of the Republic of Ireland's most reliable forwards, scoring some of the biggest goals of his generation for his country. He plays with real pace across the width of an attack, running in behind rather than staying central. His finishing has always looked sharper for Ireland than for whichever club he happened to be at.

The question worth asking is whether the service around him at Cardiff creates enough of those same running chances that made him so dangerous for Ireland.
