Florian Wirtz, The Player Who Sees It First

The German playmaker finds passes in crowded areas that teammates and opponents alike do not see coming until too late.

Wirtz collects the ball in tight areas and manipulates it with such a quick first touch that a defender closing him down often ends up facing the wrong way entirely. He does not need much space to be dangerous, which is why he thrives between the lines where most attacking midfielders get crowded out. His passing range covers the incisive short ball as easily as one played early over the top.

Liverpool paid a huge amount to bring him from German football, a decision built on the belief that a creative talent of this level does not become available often. The question is how quickly he adapts to a league that gives him far less time on the ball than he was used to. Watch whether he drifts wide to find room early, because that usually signals he is searching for space.
