Mark McGuinness, The Centre Back Who Dominates The Box

A physically imposing defender whose aerial power has earned him a reputation for keeping opponents quiet wherever he plays.

McGuinness wins the physical battles that decide games in the Championship, using his frame to control both boxes rather than just defending his own. He has picked up individual awards built on clean sheet form, evidence that his defending translates into results rather than simply looking impressive. A long education through loan spells at several clubs gave him the understanding a young centre back usually only gets by playing regularly.

The tension is whether that dominance transfers cleanly to a settled first-choice role, after a career built more on loan spells than one long run at a single club. Ireland have already handed him his senior debut, suggesting the international set up sees the same qualities Sheffield United are banking on.
