David Button, The Voice Of Experience

Button brings decades of experience across English football, now used as much to guide younger goalkeepers as to play himself.

Button has performed in front of huge crowds and tiny ones, across nearly every division English football offers, providing him a perspective a younger goalkeeper has not had time to develop yet. He organises a defence calmly and rarely appears surprised, because there are few things left in the game he has not already faced. That experience defines his role at Ipswich, guiding younger goalkeepers through the habits it took him years to master himself.

A goalkeeper his age is not signed to be a long term answer, and everyone at the club understands his role is mostly to support the long term choice between the posts. Should injury force him into the team, the question becomes whether his experience can cover for legs that move a fraction slower than they once did. Ipswich will hope his value stays in the dressing room rather than on the pitch.
