England's World Cup Record: Every Tournament, Every Exit
England have experienced the full range of World Cup emotions, with one glorious triumph in 1966 and a long history of near misses, heartbreak and what might have been. Here's a complete look at their record on football's biggest stage.
England invented football and then spent decades refusing to enter the biggest competition built around it. When they finally turned up in 1950, they lost to a part-time United States team.
There’s been a lot of ups and downs for England’s national team. The complete England World Cup record is a story of one extraordinary afternoon in 1966, surrounded by 60 years of near-misses, penalty shootout exits and moments that have scarred generations of supporters.
Here is every tournament, every exit, and the full picture of England's World Cup history.
Has England ever won the World Cup?
England have only won the World Cup a single time.
In 1966, on home soil, Geoff Hurst scored a hat-trick in a 4-2 extra-time win over West Germany at Wembley. Bobby Moore lifted the Jules Rimet Trophy. It remains the only major international trophy England have ever won.
The gap between 1966 and 2026 is now 60 years, which is pretty crazy to think about, and an agonisingly long time since we’ve won a World Cup trophy.
Every England World Cup tournament from 1950 to 2022
England didn’t enter the first three World Cups, having resigned from FIFA in 1928 over a dispute about amateurism. They rejoined in 1946 and have entered every tournament since.

England's best World Cup performances
Beyond 1966, the two semi-final appearances stand out.
In 1990, England beat Belgium and Cameroon to reach the last four before losing to West Germany in one of the most iconic penalty shootouts in the tournament's history. Gazza cried. Lineker made a gesture to the bench. The nation watched through its fingers.
In 2018, Gareth Southgate's side beat Colombia on penalties, ending a 22-year shootout curse, before defeating Sweden to reach the semis. Croatia won 2-1 in extra time in Moscow to end the run.
How does England's World Cup record compare to Germany or France?
Germany have won four World Cups and reached the final eight times in 20 appearances. France have won twice in seven knockout appearances since 1998.
England's one title from 16 appearances puts them behind both nations in terms of conversion. Their quarter-final rate is actually strong, the problem has historically been what happens in the semi-finals and finals.
Why 2026 feels different for England
Tuchel's squad is the most tactically coherent England have sent to a World Cup since 1966. Bellingham and Rice give them a midfield platform that previous England generations lacked. The 2018 and 2022 campaigns showed they can reach the knockout rounds, but the question for 2026 is whether they can go further.
Group L, with Croatia as the main obstacle, is navigable. England's World Cup results all time suggest the semi-final is achievable. What happens after that is the part nobody has figured out since Bobby Moore lifted the trophy.
