EFL Championship play-off, richest game in football, Championship play-off final prize money

The EFL Championship play-offs offer one final route to the Premier League, with promotion bringing a financial reward that makes the Wembley final the richest game in football.

Every May, four Championship clubs who missed out on automatic promotion get one more chance at the Premier League. The EFL Championship play-off is a knockout competition that ends with a single final at Wembley, and the prize for winning it is worth more than any other result in club football.

Here’s how it works, what it’s worth, and why it has produced some of the most dramatic moments in English football history.

How does the EFL Championship play-off work?

The play-off involves the four teams that finish third, fourth, fifth and sixth in the Championship table at the end of the regular season. The top two have already secured automatic promotion. The play-off decides who gets the third and final spot.

The format is straightforward. Third plays sixth in one semi-final, fourth plays fifth in the other. Both semi-finals are played over two legs, with the higher-placed team getting the second leg at home. The two winners then meet in a one-off final at Wembley Stadium, typically in late May.

Who qualifies for the Championship play-offs?

Any club finishing third to sixth in the Championship table qualifies for the play-offs. In a typical season, that means the play-off positions span a range of around 10 to 15 points, with teams that were occasionally in contention for automatic promotion mixing with sides who scraped into the top six on the final day.

Finishing third carries a practical advantage. The third-placed team plays the second leg of their semi-final at home, which can give players a significant boost when a single goal separates the sides.

What is the play-off semi-final format?

Two legs, home and away. Aggregate score decides who goes through. If the aggregate is level after 90 minutes of the second leg, extra time is played and then penalties if needed. There are no away-goals rules.

The semi-finals are tightly contested by nature. Both clubs are evenly matched in league position and separated by very little across 46 regular season games. That closeness is what makes them produce moments like Troy Deeney's last-second goal for Watford against Leicester in 2013, a counter-attack launched in the sixth minute of stoppage time from a penalty save at the other end, which ended Leicester's hopes with one touch.

Why is the play-off final the richest game in football?

The prize for winning the Championship playoffs is Premier League membership, and Premier League membership is the most lucrative status in club football. It’s estimated that the winners of the Championship play-off final see their revenue increase by approximately £170 million over a three-year period simply from promotion alone.

With the new domestic broadcast deal worth £6.7 billion across four seasons that began in 2025/26, more recent estimates place the guaranteed value closer to £200 million in the first season alone. No other single match in football produces a comparable swing in financial outcome from one result.

How much is Premier League promotion actually worth?

Even finishing bottom of the Premier League in a club's first season produces more central broadcast and commercial income than finishing top of the Championship. The minimum a promoted club receives in Premier League central payments is over £100 million per season, from broadcast distributions, facility fees and merit bonuses combined.

If a club survives relegation across multiple seasons, the accumulated value of that initial play-off win compounds significantly. Luton Town's 2023 final win was estimated to be worth around £290 million across their promotion and parachute payment cycle, even though they were relegated after one season.

The parachute payments alone, which protect relegated clubs financially for up to two seasons, provide a financial floor that makes the risk of going up worth taking.

Wembley's role in the play-off final

The play-off final has been held at Wembley since 1990, apart from a six-season spell at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff from 2001 to 2006. Since its return, it has become one of the highest-attended domestic finals in world football.

The 2019 final between Aston Villa and Derby County drew 85,826 supporters. The stadium is typically sold out months in advance, split evenly between the two sets of supporters, with demand far exceeding allocation. For clubs that have never reached Wembley in any other competition, the play-off final can represent the biggest match in their history.
