World Cup Final: Venue, Date and Which Teams Are Most Likely to Be There
Everything confirmed about the 2026 World Cup final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, the date, the location, how to get tickets, and an odds-based look at which nations are most likely to contest it.
The 2026 World Cup final is set for 19 July at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Everything about it is confirmed: the venue, the date, how to get there, and the price you'll pay if you want to be in the stands.
The only thing still to be decided is which two nations will be battling it out for the ultimate prize in football. Here's everything you need to know about the 2026 World Cup final.
Where is the 2026 World Cup final?
The final takes place at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, around eight miles west of New York City. During the tournament, FIFA will refer to the ground as New York New Jersey Stadium, in line with its policy on corporate naming. The stadium itself is best known as the permanent home of the New York Giants and New York Jets in the NFL.
MetLife Stadium has a capacity of 82,500, making it the largest venue in the tournament. It is hosting eight matches in total across the competition, more than any other city in the 2026 field.
When is the 2026 World Cup final?
The final is on 19 July 2026, with kick-off scheduled for 3:00 PM ET. That is 8:00 PM BST for UK viewers. The tournament itself runs from 11 June, when the opening match kicks off at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, through to the final 39 days later in New Jersey.
Why was MetLife Stadium chosen?
MetLife Stadium beat out Dallas and Los Angeles to host the final, with FIFA citing its capacity, infrastructure, and location as the decisive factors.
Sitting just outside one of the most recognisable cities in the world gave the venue a global profile few others could match. The New York metropolitan area also offered the transport links, hotel capacity, and international flight connections that a final of this scale demands.
The stadium previously hosted Super Bowl XLVIII in 2014 and the Copa América Centenario final in 2016. It underwent a two-phase renovation ahead of the tournament to meet FIFA's pitch size requirements, with 1,740 corner seats removed to enlarge the playing field to international standards.
How do teams reach the final under the new 48-team format?
The 2026 World Cup is the first to use a 48-team format, split into 12 groups of four. The top two teams from each group progress automatically to the Round of 32, joined by the eight best third-placed teams from across all 12 groups. That gives 32 teams a place in the knockout stage.
From the Round of 32, it is straight knockout football through the Round of 16, quarter-finals, and semi-finals before the final. A team that wins their group and goes all the way will play eight matches in total. To lift the trophy at MetLife Stadium, you have to be the best team across an entire month of football.
Which nations are the betting favourites to reach the final?
Spain and France are the co-favourites to win the tournament outright, with most bookmakers pricing them at similar odds. England are close behind in third, with Brazil and Argentina completing the top five. Portugal, Germany and the Netherlands make up the next tier of realistic contenders.
The odds paint a familiar picture. Every team in the top five has won a World Cup before, and four of them have appeared in a final since 2006. Spain are the reigning European champions under Luis de la Fuente. France have reached the last two World Cup finals, winning in 2018 and losing on penalties in 2022. England, under Thomas Tuchel, are priced as genuine contenders rather than hopeful ones for the first time in years.
For two of those favourites to meet in New Jersey on 19 July, they would need to navigate a difficult competition of knockout football without the kind of injury, poor form, or single upset that has ended so many tournament campaigns before. As ever, the favourite does not always make the final.
How to buy tickets for the World Cup final
Official tickets for the 2026 World Cup are sold through the FIFA ticketing portal at FIFA.com. Several sales phases have already taken place, including the Early Ticket Draw and the Random Selection Draw, but remaining tickets continue to be released closer to the tournament.
The prices are not for the faint-hearted. Tickets through national associations start at around £3,100 for the cheapest category, rising to over £6,600 for premium seats. On the FIFA official resale marketplace, where sellers set their own prices, Category 1 seats have been listed well above that. Secondary market platforms carry final tickets at similarly eye-watering levels. Anyone buying through a third-party platform should check the terms carefully and ensure tickets are verified before purchase.
