The youngest players to score in the Premier League?
A rundown of the youngest goalscorers in Premier League history, how the record has changed over the years, and which current wonderkids could break it next.
The Premier League has been around since 1992, and in that time fewer than ten players have scored a goal before their 17th birthday. That's how rare it is. The record has changed hands only a handful of times, and the names attached to it range from legends of the game to players who barely featured again.
Here’s what you need to know about the youngest Premier League goal-scorers of all time and the breakout stars in this season of football.
The all-time youngest Premier League goalscorers
The record currently belongs to James Vaughan, who scored for Everton against Crystal Palace in April 2005 at 16 years and 270 days old. He came off the bench for his Premier League debut, scored the final goal in a 4-0 win, and briefly looked like the next big thing.
Vaughan went on to make 47 league appearances for Everton across six years, mostly from the bench, and spent much of his career in the lower leagues. The record has outlasted his playing career by a pretty big margin.
Before Vaughan, James Milner held the record after scoring for Leeds against Sunderland on Boxing Day 2002 at 16 years and 356 days. That's the same James Milner who is still playing Premier League football in his late 30s, which says something about the longevity of the man even if his record-breaking days are long behind him.
Wayne Rooney held the record for exactly two months before Milner took it. His goal came in October 2002 in Everton's 2-1 win over Arsenal, a long-range strike that prompted Clive Tyldesley's famous "remember the name" commentary. Rooney was 16 years and 360 days old. The record lasted 63 days.
Most recently, Rio Ngumoha scored a stoppage-time winner for Liverpool against Newcastle in August 2025 on his Premier League debut, at 16 years and 361 days old. Just four days short of his 17th birthday, he came off the bench and scored to seal a 3-2 win. It's the kind of debut that tends to follow a player around for the rest of their career, for better or worse.
Young players who could break through this season
Every Premier League season produces a name that nobody outside the club's fanbase had heard of in August, but everyone seems to be talking about by Christmas. In 2025/26, there are a few breakout stars worth watching.
Rio Ngumoha is the most obvious one. The Liverpool winger has the kind of direct, instinctive style that tends to force its way into a team. With Luis Diaz having left Liverpool in the summer, there is a genuine pathway to serious minutes for him in the future.
Max Dowman at Arsenal is arguably the most talked-about teenager in the country right now. Declan Rice called him the best 15-year-old footballer in the country during pre-season. He has since made his Premier League debut, becoming one of the youngest players ever to appear in the top flight. Arteta will manage his minutes carefully, but the talent is clearly there.
Then there's Kobbie Mainoo, who after a difficult period under Amorim has rediscovered his form under caretaker Michael Carrick at United. Still only 20, he already feels like a player the Premier League has known for years. That's usually the sign of someone special.
