With just a handful of games remaining, the Championship Golden Boot race has a clear leader but no certainty. Žan Vipotnik of Swansea City sits four ahead of Haji Wright on 20 goals, with Jack Clarke at Ipswich a further two back on 14. 

Six goals separate the top three with six or seven games left for most clubs. Vipotnik, a 24-year-old Slovenian nobody outside South Wales knew much about at the start of the season, has turned himself into the most talked-about striker in the division. The question now is whether Wright and Coventry can run him down in the final weeks.

The current EFL Championship top scorers

Vipotnik leads with 20 goals from 39 appearances for Swansea City. The 24-year-old Slovenian joined from Bordeaux in 2024 and managed just seven league goals in his debut season. He more than doubled that this time around, becoming the outright leader in January, and has just signed a new contract until 2030 in March despite interest from Premier League clubs.

Haji Wright four behind on 16 from just 35 appearances for Coventry City, who lead the Championship. Jack Clarke at Ipswich completes the top three on 14. The former Sunderland winger has become one of the division's most consistent finishers in a season that has gone a long way to justifying Ipswich's £15m outlay.

Goals per 90 minutes: who is the most clinical?

Scoring volume does not always reflect efficiency. The goals per 90 and minutes per goal figures tell a more precise story.

Brandon Thomas-Asante at Coventry is the most efficient scorer in the division on a per 90 basis despite not leading the scoring chart. He scores every 132 minutes and converts 22% of his shots. Combined with Wright's 16 goals, Coventry's two-man forward line accounts for 28 league goals between them, which goes a long way to explaining why the Sky Blues sit top.

The most clinical finisher in the top 15 by conversion rate is Carlton Morris at Derby County, who converts 30% of his shots. His 11 goals from just 26 appearances, at 0.59 per 90, make him one of the most under-discussed players in the division. Jack Clarke is close behind at 29% conversion, which is notable for a winger who creates as well as finishes.

How the Golden Boot race has changed month by month

Wright led for much of the first half of the season as Coventry built their promotion challenge under Frank Lampard. Vipotnik was tracking behind him before a run through January moved him clear. Clarke emerged as a serious contender through December and January, and his 14 goals from 39 appearances gives him the most consistent distribution across the campaign.

The bottom half of the top 10 has been shaped by a high-scoring division in general. Fifteen players have reached double figures at this stage of the season, which reflects the attacking output across the Championship rather than a single dominant performer.

With just seven games left, Vipotnik's four-goal cushion makes him the strong favourite, though Wright has the advantage of playing for the division's top side with significant fixtures still to come.
