Messi has confirmed he will not play at 2026. Argentina are holders, can they defend without him? Squad, stats and historical precedent.

Argentina arrive at the 2026 World Cup as defending champions and the team every nation wants to beat. But the biggest question hanging over the tournament is not whether they have a chance, but whether the man who carried them to glory in Qatar will be on the pitch when it matters.

Here’s the latest on whether Messi will play at the 2026 World Cup, who steps up if he doesn't, and how realistic Argentina's chances are of becoming the first back-to-back World Cup winners since 1962.

Will Messi play at the 2026 World Cup?

At the time of writing, Messi is set to play. Argentina's pre-tournament friendlies against Honduras at Kyle Field on 6 June and Iceland at Jordan-Hare Stadium on 9 June are the final tune-ups, and Scaloni's 21-player core is all but locked in barring injuries.

The picture has firmed up over the past six months. Messi was non-committal in late 2025, citing his age. By spring 2026, the tone from both the player and manager had shifted from caution to confidence. He will turn 39 on 24 June, two days before Argentina's second group game against Austria in Arlington.

If he plays in 2026, it will be his sixth World Cup, a record no other player has ever set.

Is 2026 Messi's last World Cup? The retirement question

The 2026 World Cup is widely expected to be Messi's last with Argentina. He confirmed in September 2025 that the 3-0 win over Venezuela was his final competitive home match for the national side, and reporting since suggests he is likely to retire from international football after the tournament, possibly playing one farewell friendly afterwards.

There has been no formal announcement of Messi's retirement from the 2026 World Cup, and he has been careful in public not to commit to anything beyond the tournament. But the direction is clear. For Argentina fans, this is likely the last realistic chance to see him compete on football's biggest stage.

What does the Argentina squad look like without Messi?

The Argentina squad without Messi is genuinely strong on paper, which is part of why he has the option to step back from carrying every match the way he did in Qatar. Lautaro Martínez and Julián Álvarez lead the attack, two of the most clinical strikers in world football and both in form for Inter Milan and Atlético Madrid, respectively.

Enzo Fernández, Alexis Mac Allister and Rodrigo De Paul provide a midfield with creativity, defensive work and tournament experience that few sides can match. Cristian Romero, Lisandro Martínez and Nicolás Otamendi anchor a back line that conceded just 12 goals across South American qualifying, with Emiliano Martínez, the hero of the 2022 final shootout, still first-choice in goal.

If Scaloni rotates Messi during the group stage to manage minutes, the side that takes the field will still be one of the strongest in the tournament.

Argentina's realistic 2026 chances

Argentina's chances of winning in 2026 are credible, even if it's not the bookmakers' top pick. Some outlets have them as fifth favourites at around 11/1, behind Spain, France, England and Brazil, with an implied 9% probability of winning the trophy.

The bracket helps. Group J, with Algeria, Austria, and Jordan, should be a comfortable group on paper. The seeding splits Argentina away from Spain, France and England in the bracket, meaning they could only meet one of those three before the semi-finals.

If Argentina lift the trophy on 19 July, it would be their fourth, putting them level with Italy and Germany on the all-time list and trailing only Brazil's five. It’s perhaps the last time we’ll see Messi’s magic on the world stage, but who knows if it’ll be enough to carry Argentina to victory.

From Qatar to North America, every match counts

Whether Messi lifts the trophy one more time or hands the torch to Lautaro and Álvarez, every Argentinian match this summer will be live on Match Bingo. Goals, corners, late changes and the kind of drama only this side delivers, all bringing you closer to a win.
